Description
Humpback Whales have made an astounding return to the coastal waters of British Columbia. The Marine Education and Research Society (MERS) shared the following: “The Humpback Comeback is the result of both population growth post-whaling and a range shift from somewhere else. Humpbacks were whaled in British Columbia to 1966 and it is believed that, globally, 90 to 95% of the Humpbacks were killed.
Humpbacks are baleen whales and adult females in this population are 12.3 m on average. Newborns are ~4.5 metres and 680 kg. They nurse for 10 months and stay with their mothers for a year, thereby learning the migratory route between the feeding grounds of British Columbia or Alaska and the breeding grounds of Hawaii or Mexico.
The fortunate return of humpbacks form the brink of extinction is a game-changer for boaters. The threat of entanglement and collision is very real. For the sake of boater and whale safety, please see www.SeeABlowGoSlow.org for the Marine Mammal Regulations, measures to avoid collision, and what to do (and not to do) if entanglement is witnessed.”
