For decades, school students growing up in Montezuma, Georgia, attended the old brick schoolhouse on the hill on Engram Street. Once the city high school, by the time I attended it was Macon County Elementary School. By that time it was an aging but cherished old building. It's odd the little details we can remember, and for me it was the plaque next to the front door dedicating the building to local boys who had served in WWI.

Built around 1921, the general style of the building was fairly common. Not only did my Mom attend school in a very similar building in Alabama, I've stumbled over several others like it. The style is known by a number of names including Collegiate Gothic and Institutional Gothic. And certainly the Gothic arch over the front door and the castellated pediment have a Gothic revival flavor to them.

Montezuma's old schoolhouse is history now. New schools have replaced most of the old county schools which were of a similar vintage but I'm sure many of us still hold a special place in our heart for that old building even if we can't see it on the hill anymore.
